I had brunch with my new friend A today. I liked her right off the bat, when I met her three weeks ago. The fact that she shares a name with my sister piqued my interest. And that she lives just down the road was nice too. We’ve hung out a few times now, and we’re liking it. We like each other.
Old friends are comfortable. They know my history, my weaknesses, and my preferences. Like favourite shoes, they accompany me on my journey, supporting and shielding me. They fit. They feel good.
New friends are exciting. They help me see myself in new ways; they reflect back surprises. They expand my world. While I am not on a constant quest to add new friends to my life, I am always delighted when it happens.
As the old campfire song goes:
Make new friends, but keep the old.
One is silver and the other gold.
I like both kinds. Do you?
